who is jt leroy?
JT LeRoy is the author of the International Best Sellers, Sarah & The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. His novella, Harold's End, with illustrations by Cherry Hood and published by Last Gasp Books has just been published to critical acclaim. The second book in the series, Labour, is due out in the Spring of 2006. JT's third novel will be out on Viking Books 2007.JT is the guest editor in for the Da Capo Best Music Writing 2005. His work appears in many short story anthologies, including The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2003, edited by Dave Eggers and read by Tatum O'Neal on audio edition; MTV's Lit Riffs; XXX, edited by Timothy Greenfield-Saunders; Nadav Kander's Beauty's Nothing; and The Fourth Sex, Adolescent Extremes by Francesco Bonami & Raf Simon. JT's work has also been published in literary journals such as The New York Times, Francis Ford Coppolla's Zoetrope, McSweeney's, and the Oxford American Music issue. A contributing editor to Black Book, I-D, Lemon, SOMA, and 7x7 magazines, he has also written reviews, articles and interviews for The New York Times, The London Times, Spin, Film Comment, Filmmaker, Flaunt, Index, Interview, and Vogue, among others. He is syndicated world wide. Additionally, JT has written the liner notes and biographies for musicians Billy Corgan, Liz Phair, Conor Oberst, Bryan Adams, Nancy Sinatra and Courtney Love and profiled award winner Juergen Teller for the 2003 Citibank Photography Prize catalogue.
JT is Associate Producer for the film adaptation of The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, directed by Asia Argento (to be released by Palm Pictures in Spring, 2006), while the screenplay for Sarah is currently being adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher for director Stephen Shainberg with producers Mary Jane Skalski and Jeffrey Levy-Hinte. JT wrote the original script and was Associate Producer of Gus Van Sant's Elephant, which won the 2003 Palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival. He has written the liner notes for the upcoming DVD of My Own Private Idaho and recorded an audio segment with Van Sant and Jonathan Caouette. He and his band, Thistle LLC, have contributed songs to "Andy Warhol : Morning Star", a new French biographical film, for which JT also is also the voice of Warhol, reading excerpts of his Philosophy and Diaries. JT has also contributed to a podcast project for San Francisco's MOMA on Warhol. JT is currently in development of various other film and television projects.He was one of the judges in Rockstar Games Upload 4 Online Media Awards.
Sarah, JT's first novel, inspired a line of clothing by Costume National and Heatherette. He has written about fashion for various publications, including The London Sunday Times, 7x7, and the MAO Fashion Public Relations firm. He represents Gary Graham, DITA, and other fashion houses and has been photographed by Steven Klein and Timothy Greenfield Sanders, Mick Rock and Robert Wilson.
JT, along with Astor, Speedie, Steve and Dean, is part of the rock band, THISTLE LLC (http://www.thistlehq.com/), which "slides like a jazzed up piston amongst the dirty garage rock bands of the moment...Odd yes, but brilliant definitely." (I-D magazine) The band has worked with Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse; Sparklehorse; Throwing Muses). Jerry Harrison (member of Talking Heads, producer on The Von Bondies; Live; Violent Femmes); Karl Derfler (No Doubt; Motley Crue; Toots & The Maytals); and Tony Espinoza (Alanis Morissette, Vanessa Carlton, John Cale). Thistle LLC contributed a song and film to As Told by Others, a tribute to Johnny Cash, compiled by Another magazine and Thistle are featured on a Daniel Johnston tribute album along with artists Beck; Death Cab for Cutie; Tom Waits, and others on Gammon Records.
